Thinking about applying for Signature Status?

Picture

Signature Status with the FCA stands for a certain level of excellence achieved by the individual artist. There is a process to be followed and deadlines to be met in order to meet the eligibility requirements.
There are two types of Signature Status:
  • Associate Membership (AFCA)
  • Senior Membership (SFCA)
Jurying for both levels of Signature Membership is done by the FCA Board of Governors once a year. The next BOG meeting will take place in March 2017.                        Click on this How To Apply link for more information and the application package.

Our NOFCA Annual General Meeting is fast approaching

Time and Location:Thursday, November 17, 12-2:00 pm at the Vernon Community Arts Centre.
Mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend – everyone’s welcome!

This is an important meeting as we will be voting for the new executive.  Up for election will be the following positions:  president, vice president, secretary, workshops, and one position on exhibitions. If you are interested in any of these roles, please make sure you attend and participate in the election process.  If you have a person in mind that you would like to nominate for any of these positions, have a conversation with that individual and encourage them to participate as well.  We have a fine organisation and it needs a full executive to continue to thrive so please plan on attending and getting involved.

Next up - NOFCA Exhibition # 2:
September: Armstrong and Spallumcheen Art Gallery (ASMAS), theme
“Let There be Light”, non-juried.

The exhibition will feature paintings that encompass light. The phrase “Let There be Light” has been around for centuries, whether taken literally or metaphorically it offers a wide range or ways for artists to visually present light in interesting, exciting and engaging ways.

Light taken literally is visible light, which is visible to the human eye and is responsible for the sense of sight, it is emitted, absorbed and reflected from its source, the natural source of the Sun or Moon or from a wide range of human sources of light from primitive campfires to modern electric lights.

Light enhances everything it touches affecting emotion and memories, the sense of calm when we see light filtered through the branches of a tree, captured on a child’s face, brilliantly reflected off a pond, in a startling sunset or sparking campfire, these sights affect us and the options to capture light in a painting are endless.

We’ve been given every wall in the gallery to display our artwork, with
no size restriction, two paintings/artist...so please paint, paint, paint! We've also been asked to involve the public in some art-related way in September, with demonstrations, artists talks, etc., and your involvement would be appreciated. Date TBA  - Thank you!

Artists are encouraged to become a member of the art gallery. $10/year

By Sunday, August 21st we need two things.

1) The Title, Medium, Size (HxW), Your name and the Price of the painting you’ll be exhibiting in the show to one of the two emails below. If your last name starts with A-L send the details to joan_rowan@shaw.ca and if your last name is between M - Z please send the details to f
aulkner.colleen@gmail.com.  This information will be on a label by your painting.
Example:     Meandering Micca

$$$$ (Note, the gallery will take a 25% commission)

2) As well, send a brief Biography and Artist Statement on one 8 1/2  x 11 page, 500 words max. This information will be put in a booklet ASMAS creates for the show. Thanks.

NOFCA Exhibition # 3:
October 13-December 22, Vernon Public Art Gallery (VPAG), this is a FCA juried show.

Theme: “Diversity”, in broader terms.
Note: W
hen we identified “Diversity” as a working title for this exhibition, in discussion with the VPAG curator we see it as an umbrella expression for a group exhibition where each artist’s research and interest in conveying visual information differ; and it is this ‘diversity’ of approach that unifies the exhibition and further reflects the definition of ‘diversity’: the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc. This is a perfect opportunity for artists to produce new work which addresses ‘diversity’ from many points of view, working in their preferred medium, conveying their concept and approach in their Artist Statement.

Maximum Number of paintings/artist:
Two. Entry Fee: $15/painting.
Size restriction:
Maximum 40” on the longest side.

By Wednesday, September 21st, we need two things.

This information will be in a booklet and made accessible to the public. Thank you.

Jurying Submission date, location and time: Drop off your painting(s) on Monday, September 26 to the Vernon Community Arts Centre between 9:30-11am, and picked up your painting (s) that afternoon between 3-4:30pm.

Book Review

Picture

I found this book at our local library.
It is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the origins of contemporary art.
"Modern art, filled with complex themes and subtle characteristics, is a wonder to view, but can be intimidating for the casual observer to comprehend. In this accessible, practical guide, author and instructor Jon Thompson explores more than 200 works, helping readers to unlock each painting's meaning."

If you have a favorite book you would like to share send a message to me, your friendly NOFCA Webmaster, at Wendy Goodall and I will happily post it.
